Labor Day Weekend

This past weekend my aunt Maren came down from Colorado to visit us (and Grandma Jolene for half the weekend). We went to the zoo, the botanical gardens and the aquarium. Here are some pictorial highlights.

Fire

A few days ago Taylor had made a little campsite/nest under his swing set in the backyard.

Taylor: Mom, can I have one match? I just need one match.

Kim: What do you want a match for?

Taylor: I just want to make a small fire.

Kim: No way.

Taylor: But I'll be really careful!!!

Kim then proceeded to instruct him on the dangers of fires and the need to be extremely careful with all things flammable.

Two Cute Pics

Reading to Emery

Taylor and Autumn do a good job trying to keep Emery occupied. Here Taylor is "reading" to Emery. They love him very much. After this Taylor told Kim, "It's hard work taking care of a baby!"

Classic Statements from Taylor

Tonight as I was sitting down with Taylor to read him some books before bed he said to me, "Daddy, I like you the best...but I like Mommy too".

Sleep

Emery slept 8 hours last night!!! We like sleep. Sleep is good.

You Might Want to Check This Out

Money-wise

Taylor is really into playing "store". He brings something up to me and asks how much is costs. I'll give him a number and then he brings some pretend money (alphabet magnets and matchbox cars are his favorite currency). The other day, he and Autumn were playing outside and he came and said he needed stuff to fix the tire on his rocket car (our playset). I "sold" him what he needed. A few minutes later he came in and this is how the conversation followed.
Taylor: The rocket car can't be fixed. I need a new one. How much does it cost?
Mom: $15,000.
(Taylor pauses as he thinks about this price)
Mom: How much do you have?
Taylor: I have 10...thoughtful pause...I guess I better go back to work!

He then went back outside for a little bit then into the kitchen to get 15 magnets to pay me for a new rocket car.

He's got more wisdom already than a lot of people in their 30's. I was just glad he didn't reply, "just put it on my credit card!".

Smiles

Emery started smiling socially last week at about 6 weeks old. His favorite times to smile seem to be when I mention something about sleeping or getting on more of a schedule. Much to my chagrin, he seems to find these things funny. He hasn't quite caught on that mommy is very serious about sleep. He is getting ever so much cuter and social which is fun. I love the smiles and also look forward to when he is sleeping more consistently at night :).

Cute Pics of Autumn

Kim is excited that after actually 2 and 1/2 years, Autumn's hair is actually long enough now that she can do something with it.

Emery - 1 Month

Classic Summer Stuff

A couple interesting notes:

1. Autumn is still in her jammies and it's 9:40am on Saturday morning

2. They are eating Popsicles at 9:40 in the morning

Emery's First Bath

This is Nasty

Autumn left us a little fecal present in her bed today when she decided to take her diaper off during nap time. Taylor discovered it and was quick to alert Mommy. All I can say is that I was glad that I wasn't at home. Autumn has had some interesting experiences with the poo-nar. Remember this one?

The Kids Dig Emery

Basically the kids can't keep their hands off him. We are working on helping them be gentle with him. Their definition of "gentle" and Mommy and Daddy's is often very different.

Rat Nest

Ever wonder where Autumn gets the fuzzy rat nest hair in the morning? It's encoded in the DNA and passed on from the mother.

Autumns sayings

Autumn is around 2 1/2 now but her language skills are a bit interesting. She says quite a bit, but her pronunciation is "unique". Most of the time she is communicating with the utmost seriousness of intent but all we hear is incoherent babble. It's pretty funny to watch.

Here are some of the current ones:

1. Walla Balla (Water Bottle)
2. Emy Lucy (Emery Lewis)
3. Tay-Uh (Taylor)
4. Giese Awk (DC Talk)
5. Nuggle Me (Snuggle me)

Fun in the Stream

We had a fun day today playing in a mountain stream with our friends the Rushs. This was about 40 min from our house. The kids loved it, but think our dog Molly has the best time of all. She was soooo excited to be able to play in the water and run around.

Emery - 12 Days

Towers

Taylor loves to build towers and will use almost anything he can get his hands on for the sake of his constructs. In the picture above you can see some interesting things that he used.

Autumn's New Favorite Toy

This is what she affectionately calls her "longneck". She insisted that she sleep with it last night.

More pics of the new edition

Emery Lewis Nielsen

The Trilogy of children is now complete. Trifecta, trinity, trilectical tension, triceratops, triple threat position... all that to say we now have three kids.

Emery was welcomed into this world yesterday at 2:02 pm. We were scheduled for a c-section. We got to the hospital at around 1pm and he was born an hour later. Our OB was not messing around. It was the fastest thing I have ever seen. I would rather have that than waiting around all day.

Here are the specs:
-6 lbs 11 oz
-20 inches
-Flaming red hair like his old man
-Wicked cone head

He looks a lot more like my side of the family, especially with the red hair. My other two kids are practically twins, so it's cool to have him already looking a bit different. I guess we'll have to wait and see. The 1 day old impressions probably don't mean much.

Kim is doing well and since this is her 3rd c-section she really knows what to expect. God has been so good to us to provide three beautiful children.

I'll post more pictures soon.
