Balloon Fiesta Special Treatment

Yesterday morning Taylor and I got to go to mass ascension at the Balloon Fiesta for the special shapes balloons. On a sad note, Autumn was supposed to come with us but she woke up at 2 am with a fever and cough. It was a very early morning anyway (we had to leave at 5:15am) so we decided we better keep her home with Zach and let her rest (that and not infect everyone at the park :)). She was very disappointed but seems to be recovering.

We had been to a balloon glow at night but never a mass ascension in the morning. It was an extra special time, as our friend Amanda got us in for rock star treatment. Her company gave her 2 parking passes that allowed us to drive into the park and also got to eat breakfast and hang out in the tent with the balloon pilots and crew. Her dad is a zebra (helps control crowds and gets the balloons off safely) and he set up a meeting with the Wells Fargo balloon crew (a huge carriage balloon) for our friends the Hafenrichters. Their daughter Ella, age 4, has been battling nephrotic syndrome of her kidneys for a couple of years and will most likely go into renal failure soon and require dialysis and kidney transplant. One of the things she said she would like to do, is ride in a hot air balloon. They can't take up kids that young, but they were going to let her sit in the basket right before take off. You can see in the pictures that once she was up close, she wasn't quite as sure that this was a fun thing. The balloons are much larger and louder up close and she is quite shy! She did get to sit on the edge though and even though her face doesn't show it, she loved it. Taylor also loved the chance to be up close. He even got to touch the big cow (it is absolutely mammoth, those are just the horns)!.

I love the special shaped balloons, and we didn't have ANY in Indianola this year. Was the one shaped like Jesus there?? It's named "He is Risen." I wish I was kidding.

We didn't see "him" but my friends told me all about it. They said he is floating on a cloud and holding out his hands. We looked and looked b/c we wanted to see it up close but no go. The freakiest part, I guess, is that his fingers wiggle in the wind! Who thinks this is a good idea!?
